Shermount Differentiators

At Shermount Public School, our teaching-learning process is designed to ensure that we focus not just on the “what” of learning, but also on the “how.” We believe that experiential learning fosters lifelong learners. Our methodologies and best practices include specially designed and well-acclaimed programs, such as:

Choice Time Activities

Choice Time Activities allow children to explore their interests through a variety of hands-on experiences. Whether it’s looking at a storybook, building castles in the sandpit, playing with blocks or play dough, or role-playing as their chosen character, children move freely among different activity corners, indulging their curiosity in the discovery spaces provided.

Circle Time

Circle Time is a designated period each week where the class teacher bonds with students, addressing issues and fostering a sense of community. This time is also used to instill the school’s core values, providing a platform for open communication and problem-solving within the class group

Wonder Time

Wonder Time develops one of the most important skills for young learners: observation. Children explore various materials to touch, observe, and manipulate, learning to observe, record, infer, and conclude. This activity nurtures their innate curiosity and scientific thinking.

Show ‘N’ Tell

Show ‘N’ Tell, used in Elementary and Lower Primary grades, develops language, confidence, and presentation skills. Moving from structured to unstructured sessions, it provides children with a supportive platform to speak, encouraging them to present and express themselves in front of an audience.

DEAR (Drop Everything and Read)

DEAR is a reading program included in the timetable from Kindergarten to Grade V. This additional reading time complements the regular library periods, fostering a love for reading and improving literacy skills.

DEED (Debate, Extempore, Elocution, and Drama)

DEED consists of four periods per month dedicated to debate, extempore speaking, elocution, and drama for all grades. The Key Activity Coordinator ensures these periods are effectively utilized, enhancing students’ communication and performance skills.

Research and Referral

Research and Referral provides opportunities for children to explore and discover through research, developing their inquiry skills. This program encourages children to ask out-of-the-box questions and approach topics from multiple perspectives, leading to comprehensive understanding and 360° learning.

Eqube

Eqube, the Life Education Programme for Grades III to VI, focuses on reflection and self-empowerment. This double-period weekly session helps children carve out a vision for their lives, fostering sensitive, thoughtful, and proactive individuals who make a positive impact on society.

Writer’s Workshop

Writer’s Workshop is an essential part of the Grade IV to VII English Curriculum. It encourages children to write original and meaningful pieces, which are then polished through drafting and redrafting. This individualized approach meets various curriculum objectives and nurtures creative writing skills.

The Reading Programme

The Reading Programme is a comprehensive, graded initiative from Nursery to Grade V, aiming to develop effective readers by choice, not by chance. The closure activity of this program informs teachers about each child’s level of comprehension and encourages creative expression and connections.

Jig Saw Learning

Jig Saw Learning is a cooperative strategy that promotes individualized learning and collaboration. It allows children to learn at their own pace and according to their learning styles, optimizing their strengths. This strategy is a precursor to a Flipped Classroom environment, where students take more control of their learning.

At Shermount Public School, these innovative programs and practices ensure that our students not only acquire knowledge but also develop critical thinking, creativity, and lifelong learning skills.
